David Stewart Klein‘s 5th solo exhibition
“As the People Pass By”, David Stewart Klein’s fifth solo exhibition embraces human beings the artist interacted with, engaged with, and finally interpreted in different parts of the world: Costa Rica, London, and Los Angeles, along with other characters of his creation.
The collection of portraits was created in a way that allowed these people to breathe their natural life, without the concern of judgment, while their image was being captured. Klein wanted each person to forget they were being observed to create a very intimate view, each painting being a completely unique moment in time, an impression.
In a body of work made mainly in oil, gouache, and watercolor, Klein focuses deeply on the richness of individual characters, complimenting each portrait with a unique color palette.
As the People Pass By, captures with each painting, an eternal moment in a singular image, a footprint of the soul of a person, and yet acknowledges that we are all limited, a fleeting breath of air.
“As the People Pass By, is a tribute to the fleeting moments of connection during the last year of my travels and in my current city of residence, Los Angeles. Of all the people we meet, some stay a little longer than others, but ultimately we are just left to live with these impressions, imprints of the souls of others.“

Klein took a solo expedition to Costa Rica in 2023, exploring the local culture and the natural beauty, in the jungle. Klein created the mural “Eb & Flow“ to compliment the artwork made about local “Ticos” and to immerse his audience in the way he felt while there.

Klein lived and worked in a studio with models and many pads of paper and various supplies for three months in 2023, where he created a large body of work. Some of this artwork was exhibited as his “Three Women” collection, a part of “The London Series”.
The home-base of the artist, Klein spends much time in the studio, where he works from live models, and photographs.
After processing his experiences, Klein created unique expressions and characters to evoke powerful emotions.
